Chapter 7 of Clinical Notes on Disorders of Childhood. In this chapter, Winnicott notes that attempts to prevent heart disease by identifying and treating rheumatic children in a clinic have led to the frequent use of this diagnosis for many unexplained illnesses, including the nondescript pains and sore throats of childhood. Winnicott discusses, with reference to examination, some reasons for these diagnoses.
