Prunella Briance (b. 1926) is the founder of the Natural Childbirth Association (later the Natural Childbirth Trust) and the author of the book Childbirth with Confidence, for which Winnicott wrote the foreword [CW 5:5:24].

15 July 1957

Dear Mrs Briance,

I am grateful to you for your letter of 11th July, and naturally it gives me great pleasure to think that my article in the Nursing Mirror of 24th May has appealed to you.i I have found myself very much in sympathy with Grantly Dick Read’s attitude and I wrote to him personally about this some years ago. I have also quoted from his work in one of the chapters of my Collected Papers which are due to be published in a month or two. It would give me pleasure if you would accept for your library my book on The Child and the Family and I would like to know whether you find the general attitude in this book agreeable.

Unfortunately I shall not be able to come to the lecture on 28th August as I shall be out of this country on holiday.

Yours sincerely, (p. 240)
