In this letter to Anna Freud, Winnicott confirms that she will be one of the discussants of Bowlby’s paper ‘Separation Anxiety’. Winnicott expresses his uncertainty on whether they will be discussing the development of Freud’s theory of anxiety, the clinical effect of separation in the seven months to third birthday period, or the contribution of ethology to the theory of instincts.
