This chapter explores contributing to the development of body image, body-image dissatisfaction, and disturbance. It discusses the role of gender and culture, as they may potentially moderate the pathways for body-image development and disturbances, as well as the current status of empirically supported programs for the prevention and treatment of body-image disturbance. It also makes suggestions for future research directions.
