In this letter to the British Medical Journal on the use of shock treatment for mental disorder, Winnicott states his belief that the course of medical evolution has been interrupted and set back by the treatment of mental disorder by the induction of fits. He believes this treatment is a shortcut to psychotherapy and a way of doing psychiatry without knowing anything about human nature.
