This chapter discusses social phobia (also referred to as social anxiety disorder). It explores definitions and clinical characteristics, social anxiety as a risk factor, and factors related to the development of social anxiety. The chapter also presents a discussion of research investigationsprimarily conducted by the Child and FamilySocial Interaction Project at West Virginia University into pathways to social anxiety disorder.
