This chapter presents an overview of findings from selected studies ofearly learning that have potential to facilitate learning and social developmentof young children before school entry. First, an operational definitionof early prevention is provided from which to view study findings. Then theprocedures used to locate the studies for review and to estimate interventioneffects are described. Next, findings from selected studies are organizedand discussed according to three outcome domains: pre-literacy, mathematics,and social competence. The chapter concludes with a discussion of theimportant findings and possible directions for early prevention science in thefuture.
