External life stresses cause strain and tension, to the detriment of physical and emotional health. These stresses can affect both seizure frequency and quality of life. Participants experience more difficulty controlling seizures in the face of prolonged stress. This chapter presents information about the effects of different stressors—such as life changes, marital discord, financial problems, and the death of loved ones—on a person’s health and specifically on seizure control. It offers effective strategies for dealing with stressors. Participants observe how stress may trigger their seizures and learn to make a stress reduction chart. They then set realistic goals for reducing external life stresses, one stressor at a time.
