Competent practice in clinical psychology requires an understanding of the ethical standards required of all psychologists, and proficiency in applying these principles. Given the importance and centrality of ethical conduct and professional integrity in clinical psychology, this chapter focuses exclusively on the topic of ethical competence. Competency in ethics will be described, the importance of an ethical decision making model will be discussed, and several issues identified as common dilemmas psychologists encounter will be highlighted. Furthermore, current trends in competency-based approaches to training will be reviewed including behavioral benchmarks for measuring competency across training levels, methods of assessing competencies, and possible remediation plans for those displaying problems in professional ethical competency.
