This chapter introduces the treatment rationale for gradual exposure, as well as the practical steps for engaging youth in the development of a trauma narrative. The principles of gradual exposure and the importance of eliciting feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations, and positive interactions experienced before, during, and/or after the CSA experiences are discussed. Ideas for helping youth develop the narrative and minimize or overcome avoidance are offered. Creative modes of engaging youth in trauma narration other than written narratives are also suggested. The importance of between-session coping skills practice activities and end-of-session positive rituals are also discussed. Parallel work designed to prepare parents for more open parent-child communication about the trauma(s) endured is outlined. ...Less
