Thoughts of using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs are common. Anyone who stops using a substance will think about it again. It’s a normal part of the change process to think about something that one once enjoyed or on which one became addicted. Thoughts of using are often associated with other recovery issues such as cravings, social pressures, family and interpersonal conflicts, and upsetting feelings. Specific thoughts can contribute to urges or cravings or to feelings such as depression or anger. Challenging and changing such thoughts can help us stay sober and feel better about ourselves and our lives. The goals of this chapter are to identify and practice controlling thoughts of using to decrease the risk of relapse and to learn to use a variety of coping strategies to manage thoughts of using.
