Graduate school represents a big investment of money, time, and intellectual energy. This chapter offers recommendations about how to maximize the return on that investment. First, the differences in undergraduate and graduate education are highlighted, and readers are urged to shift their mindset from a primary focus on grades to a more comprehensive focus on professional and personal development. Next, the chapter provides an overview of the course topics likely to be required in most graduate mental health programs, as well as specialty courses students may encounter in some disciplines. Recommendations for how to prepare for unfamiliar course topics are suggested. What to expect and look for in practicum training opportunities is also reviewed, with advice about how to choose practicum placements. The chapter concludes with recommendations about how to use graduate school as the launching pad for successful employment and professional networking.
