This chapter focuses on the importance of understanding the negative cycles that contribute to panic attacks and agoraphobia. There are three major parts to the emotions of anxiety and panic: physical symptoms, thoughts, and behaviors. Physical symptoms, thoughts, and behaviors contribute to each other in what is called a negative cycle. Negative thoughts lead to fear, and fear leads to more physical symptoms and escape behaviors that snowball into more negative thoughts, and so on. The end result is intense fear or panic—a panic cycle. By understanding these cycles, one will develop a good awareness of what causes panic attacks. This program teaches ways of interrupting the panic and agoraphobia cycles, including the development of breathing skills and thinking skills.
