This chapter examines the importance of developing more breathing skills and thinking skills, looking at ways of replacing negative thoughts with evidence-based thinking. Two errors characterize anxious thinking: (1) jumping to conclusions and (2) blowing things out of proportion. The first step toward change is to treat thoughts as guesses rather than as facts. The goal is to develop more realistic ways of thinking. One can develop more realistic beliefs by considering all of the evidence—and from obtaining additional information, where necessary—such as the information on panic attacks. It is important to recognize that whatever it is that one is worried about is not going to last forever and is survivable.
