Chapter 5 of Clinical Notes on Disorders of Childhood. In this chapter Winnicott describes the extremely difficult problem of diagnosis of active rheumatic carditis, along with a description of the healthy heart of a nervous subject and of the normal heart. Winnicott discusses the examination of the heart, percussion, auscultation, systolic thrills, the position of the apex beat, mitral stenosis, congenital heart malformation and heart failure.
