In his Memorandum on Corporal Punishment, written for the County Hostels Committee of Oxfordshire County Council, Winnicott suggests that the Committee should consider the subject of corporal punishment. He describes the pros and cons of corporal punishment in the management of difficult children and stresses the importance of recognizing that many of these children are mentally ill, and that they require treatment, not punishment.
