This paper was the first lecture in the radio series ‘The Ordinary Devoted Mother and Her Baby’. In it Winnicott describes how the baby is human and every bit of experience of the baby eventually effects the personality of a human adult. Winnicott describes how his term ‘ordinary devoted mother’ has made mothers feel uneasy. He goes on to say that some mothers, who do well as mothers, need time to get to love their own child. A mother may love one baby easily and yet take time to be drawn towards another. He also describes the baby’s love for the mother’s devotion and care.
