A letter from Winnicott to Joan Riviere discussing Melanie Klein’s paper ‘A Study of Envy and Gratitude’. Winnicott expresses his view that although as an analyst Klein is exceptional, some of her theoretical thinking is muddled. He discusses the idea of the ‘good breast’, infant envy and the mother’s curious state of sensitivity which Winnicott calls the ‘state of primary maternal preoccupation’.
