In this lecture given at the Institute of Education, London, and published in a book entitled Moral Education in a Changing Society, Winnicott asserts that all children have the capacity to be educated morally; it is a universal and long-standing aspect of humanity. Winnicott’s account focuses on emotional development and the natural integration of experiences of good and bad through the support and empathy provided by parents. Through this, trust and reliability in the world begins. Parents need to create for the child a sense of the moral values that they uphold. Allowing children to experience the inevitable conflicts of powerful feelings and to learn to tolerate them gives a sense of goodness and badness an internal and an external place. This can lead to a creative engagement with the world.
