This chapter explores the complex, multidimensional relationship between communication and stress in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It is based on the premise that because of the neurological and physiological challenges associated with conditions on the autism spectrum and the endemic communication challenges seen in this population, these children are uniquely vulnerable to stress. Cognitive and social-cognitive predisposing factors are considers, as well as the pragmatic and processing deficits that feed into the stress cycle, and the nature of the environmental demands that serve as the context within which stress occurs. Strategies for stress reduction and management are discussed.
