Chapter 1 presents introductory information about the treatment program and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This includes an assessment on the impact that the child’s OCD has on family functioning, as well as information on OCD itself (OCD as a neurobehavioral disorder, obsessions and compulsions, the development and course of OCD , spectrum disorders and comorbidity). OCD behavior is compared and contrasted with non-OCD behaviors (normal development rituals, anxieties and misbehaviour). An overview of the program structure is also presented, including skills that will be learned by the child and the parents, as well as the program’s goals.
