In this chapter the author reflects on her experience as a child psychiatrist and her participation on the commission that studied the Virginia Tech massacre. She describes frustrations with trends toward privatizing public mental health services and the impact of managed care organizations. The political process and the lack of substantive input in the development of mental health policy are discussed. She describes the negative impact of current policy on individuals experiencing mental health challenges and offers recommendations for improving care as well as enhancing deliberations about critical issues.
