Triggers are physical states, interactions with the outside world or emotions and thoughts that may precipitate seizures. Patients learn that triggers often lead to strong negative states, which in turn produce target symptoms such as seizure. Common examples of triggers include skipping seizure medication, staying up too late, excessive physical exertion, discord with a loved one, loneliness, and situations that lead to an emotional state of excitement or frustration. Interpersonal interactions, emotions, and thoughts may cause negative states that precede seizures. This chapter teaches methods for identifying triggers, including self-observation, journaling, creating a trigger chart, and using the seizure calendar. At the end of the chapter, the patient is introduced to a Thought Record.
