Some of the triggers previously identified in Chapter 5 lead to seizures because they cause a negative emotion or state, such as fear, anger, or hurt. The goal of Chapter 6 is to learn skills to cope with the negative state before it leads to a target symptom, such as a seizure. The negative state can be seen as a “demand for action.” The two types of productive action to deal with a negative state are (1) action aimed at relieving the source of the negative state, and (2) action aimed at relieving oneself of the effects of the negative state. This chapter teaches the participant how to take productive action when faced with a negative emotion or state. Patients continue to use Thought Records for seizures to help process situations, moods, thoughts, beliefs, and evidence, and to generate an alternative thought.
