The grief response of children to loss and the death of a military parent is complicated by their own prior loss history and the preexistence of other behavioral and/or psychosocial conditions, such as multiple separations from parents due to deployments. Some surviving children will have a complicated or complex experience during their military parental grief journey. Adults responsible for their care and treatment must be able to identify their risk factors and help secure the most appropriate support and proven services, such as those associated with the companioning, peer support, and integrated survivor support models. Adults who can address the specific needs of grieving children with education and the most appropriate resources and therapeutic services will be able to help them normalize their understanding of their experience and provide options for healing throughout their bereavement journey.
