Animal hoarding is considered a manifestation of hoarding disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5). This chapter reviews the known characteristics of this manifestation, the epidemiology of animal hoarding, and what is known about the psychiatric status of those who meet criteria for the disorder. It then focuses on the psychological assessment of animal hoarding and on evidence-based clinical interventions for individuals who suffer from this condition. This chapter also reviews the characteristics and legal ramifications of animal neglect, and discusses implications for future research in both animal neglect and animal hoarding.
