In this chapter the authors discuss case conceptualization and the critical role it serves in clinical psychology. The general goals and functions of case formulation are reviewed and discussed. Also, a selected number of case conceptualization models representing various theoretical orientations are elucidated including psychodynamic, behavioral and cognitive behavioral models. A transtheoretical model cutting across various orientations to practice in clinical psychology is also presented ranging from choosing a model, building an effective relationship, collecting information, synthesizing information, and designing and evaluating treatment. Finally, benchmark competencies and methods for assessing competence in case conceptualization are offered.
