Many children and youth with ASD benefit from having their natural speech supplemented or replaced through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. The purpose of this chapter is to synthesize the research evidence related to four current key issues and priorities facing children and youth with ASD and little or no functional speech, including (a) natural speech production, (b) Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), (c) augmented input, and (d) advances in technology. Where available, we will rely on existing systematic reviews rather than individual studies and consult appraisals of these reviews.
