Bullying and suicide are among the greatest public health problems affecting youth today. Yet the association between bullying and suicide is complex, making it necessary to temper the causal messaging in media coverage of bullying-related suicides. Comprehensive programs and approaches should be implemented to promote healthy school environments and social connectedness, in turn reducing the risk for both bullying and suicide. Moreover, training and educating adults to identify and intervene with youth at risk for bullying and suicide are critical steps toward prevention. Ultimately, using a public health approach to target an array of overlapping risk and protective factors for youth’s mental, emotional, and behavioral problems represents a promising strategy that may have synergistic effects for preventing both bullying and suicide.
