This chapter covers Tier 1 or preventative strategies that may be conducted school- or district-wide to boost school attendance and reduce overall absenteeism rates. Sections include school climate interventions, health-based strategies, school-based mental health programs, social-emotional learning programs, parental involvement initiatives, district policies, and school dropout prevention programs as well as effective components of these programs. School climate interventions include aspects of school-wide positive behavior support, and these aspects are discussed in relation to school attendance. Health-based strategies include physical and mental health school-based centers. Parental involvement initiatives can include cultural-based ideas as well as school-based programs that draw parents into school.
